Bayboro, the seat of Pamlico County, is named for its location on the Bay River. Pamlico County is situated on a peninsula and is halfway between New York and Florida. Bayboro is served by State Highways 55 and 304, about 50 miles northeast of Jacksonville and 125 miles southwest of Norfolk.
